The National Theatre is now accepting applications for its exciting training programs aimed at empowering young people with vital skills in the creative sector. These initiatives coincide with Discover! Creative Careers Week (November 18-22), highlighting pathways into creative professions.
Nationwide Young Technicians invites 13-19-year-olds to explore backstage roles through a free, hybrid program. In collaboration with HOME Manchester, Nottingham Playhouse, and Theatre Royal Plymouth, participants will engage in online sessions led by industry professionals, receiving kits to practice hands-on skills in lighting, sound, and staging. The 11-week course kicks off on February 4, 2025.
How to Be a Producer, a week-long course for those aged 18-25, will take place at the National Theatre Studio from February 17-21, 2025. Led by award-winning producer Ellie Keel, this free program focuses on essential skills such as team building and project management, culminating in a live event takeover.
Additionally, a new Careers in Action backstage tour, launching in early 2025, will delve into various behind-the-scenes roles, developed in collaboration with Chadwell Heath Academy students. These tours, available to schools and the public, will showcase the diverse skills that bring theatre to life.
Simon Stephens, Head of the Skills Centre, emphasizes the National Theatre's role as a major employer and skills incubator in the sector. With 90% of apprentices finding jobs in the industry post-training, the Theatre is committed to nurturing the next generation of creative professionals.Former participant Zara (16) reflects, “Young Technicians boosted my confidence and opened doors to more work experience.”
