Paul Di’Anno, Iron Maiden’s Original Frontman, Dies at 66

Paul D'Anno, the legendary heavy metal singer who fronted Iron Maiden during their formative years, has died at the age of 66. His label Conquest Music has confirmed he died at home in Salisbury time whose long battle with health issues confined him to a wheelchair.

A Rock Pioneer

Born Paul Andrews in London’s Chingford, D’Anno joined Iron Maiden in 1978, attending reluctantly at the start of auditions. “Their old singer had a silly sword, and we were laughing,” he said, but he soon developed a natural choral camaraderie. Her raw, powerful vocals were featured on the iconic debut album Iron Maiden (1980) and its follow-up Killers (1981), both of which marked the band’s early success tough.

Trials and Triumphs

Despite his support, Di’Anno struggled with substance abuse and personality clashes within the band, leading to his departure after the Killers tour. He was replaced by Bruce Dickinson, who has since become the face of Iron Maiden.

Iron Maiden paid tribute to D’Anno, acknowledging the pivotal role he played in shaping their early sound and success. “His pioneering work is fondly remembered,” they wrote.

A Life of Music and Struggle

After leaving Iron Maiden, D’Anno pursued music projects including Gogmagog and Battlezone. But legal problems and health issues marred his life, including a prison sentence for domestic violence in the early '90s and subsequent struggles with addiction “It was prison that started to shape my life,” he often reflects on these experiences.

Despite many challenges, including a knee injury and an eight-month hospital stay due to sepsis, Di’Anno was determined to perform. Earlier this year he announced he was retiring from smaller touring in 2025, expressing a desire to continue playing festivals.

A Lasting Legacy

Paul D’Anno’s journey through the highs and lows of rock has left an indelible mark on heavy metal. His legacy as a pioneering pioneer and his fervent support for Iron Maiden was remembered by fans around the world.
